Today is all about the wild weather of the
world.
In Greece, wildfires of ‘biblical’
proportions have destroyed homes, killing dozens of families.
Rescuers continue to sweep the wreckage in
search of missing people- thousands more have been left homeless- their houses
charred to ashes.
In Laos, a dam has collapsed. At least
three thousand people still in need of rescue, after they were stranded atop
buildings due to flash flooding.
An unprecedented heatwave in Japan has been
declared a natural disaster, as the death toll mounts nears a hundred, with
22,000 hospitalized for heatstroke.
The heat shows no sign of abating.
But despite these stories peppering the
global headlines,
And despite the snowballing repetition of
phrases like ‘hottest month in the history of human civilization’-
No one seems to be acknowledging the giant,
flaming elephant in the room.
Our climate is changing.
The news today, regarding climate change-
talks about Mary Robinson, who is launching a new feminist fight against global
warming.
A Facebook video is spreading climate
denial misinformation to the platforms 5 million users.
And there are smatterings of stories,
discussing how ‘climate change may cause more suicides in the US, by the year
2050’.
These stories, already lacking in urgency,
are from local news platforms, independent agencies, and freelance journalists.
The large majority of the Mainstream Media
have a vacuum where the global warming discussion should sit. The entire topic
is being ignored.
Perhaps, it’s not relevant. Perhaps, the
huge influxes of wild fires and heatwaves- wherein pockets of the world are
literally burning up- have zero connection to a warming planet.
It’s not as though any recorded increase in
temperature has been mapped.
Or- hold on. What’s this about the Paris
Agreement? Formulated in 2016, to try to cap the global temperature rise at 1.5
degrees Celsius?
Of course, last year, we’d already
surpassed that point, so they loosened the belt and decided to aim for a limit
of a 2 degree temperature rise.
The way we are going. Even a 2 degree limit
is starting to look like a fantasy.
But surely such a slight temperature
increase can’t be that important? After all, the USA has pulled out of the
Paris Agreement- so any goals must be just some hippie guidelines you might as
well ignore.
Wrong.
If the global temperature increases to 3
degrees Celsius- there will be catastrophic consequences.
Many cities will be underwater. Droughts,
hurricanes and heatwaves will be commonplace. Migration will rocket, but not
due to war- due to people trying to flee the wreckage reaped by our baking blue
planet.
No need to worry though- it’s not us that
will suffer, it’s the future generations.
Our grandkids might be a little peeved but
that’s a way away- so why bother making a headline about it?
